“God has called us to be citizens of the city of Los Angeles, and to be faithful to that calling we must seek the welfare of the city- engaging, investing, and interceding on its behalf.”

It’s easy to see where we live as simply a choice that we make for our own benefit. Does this city offer me what I want in life? Sometimes we are forced to be somewhere that we don’t want to be and instead it becomes an inconvenience. Both of these views of where we live stand in sharp contrast to what God calls us to: He calls us to be faithful citizens and seek the welfare of the city in which we live. In Los Angeles this calling is manifested in engaging and participating in the city, investing our time, energy, and resources for its benefit, and praying on its behalf.

Application Questions

  1. Do you tend to view Los Angeles as an idol (with a consumer mentality) or as an inconvenience (as a place that gets in the way of your true life)?
  2. What are three ways (in each category) that God is calling you to engage, invest, and intercede for Los Angeles?
