Advent is a season of waiting. For thousands of years our fallen world waited anxiously for the coming of the Messiah, the one who would rescue mankind from sin and wrath. This season of Advent (Latin for “coming”) is celebrated during the weeks leading up to the birth of Jesus on Christmas Day.

How To Use This Reading Guide

Below are this week’s daily Bible verses and stories from the Jesus Storybook Bible (appropriate for all ages, but geared for children 12 and under), as well as the lyrics for this week’s song.

Many people choose to light candles as part of an “Advent wreath”, each candle marking another week closer to the arrival of Christ Jesus. If you choose not to use the Jesus StoryBook, we recommend that you read the daily Bible verses, then the explanation section for that day, then sing the songs and light your candle. May this Advent celebration be full of eager expectancy and overflowing joy!

Luke 2

God had been waiting for this moment- He wanted to tell everyone. Angels came to tell shepherds about the King, Jesus, who was here to be the Rescuer. They ran to Him, and they saw “a baby sleeping in his mother’s arms. This baby would be like that bright star shining in the sky that night. A Light to light up the whole world. Chasing away darkness…And the darker the night got, the brighter the star would shine.”

Revelation 21:1-4 and 22:1-21

The coming of Jesus reminds us of when He is coming again, to one day set the world right, to bring His eternal Kingdom, to finally and fully defeat Satan, sin and death, and to bring His people into their eternal home. Come quickly, Lord Jesus.

Joy To The World

Joy to the world! the Lord is come;
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare him room,
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven, and heaven, and nature sing.

Joy to the world! the Saviour reigns;
Let saints their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders, of His love.
