Cornerstone exists because of Jesus. We are a people who have been transformed by the gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ. Through Jesus’ death and resurrection, God has forgiven us and adopted us into his family. Now, we have a whole new life.
Through the gospel, God redeems us, forgives us, and adopts us into his family. The good news of Jesus’ death and resurrection makes each one of us a new creation and gives us a new identity: children of God. This is why we can never think of the church as an organization or a building. The church is actually a family—God’s family, filled with redeemed sinners that are now his children.
Through the gospel, God forgives us, adopts us into his family, and makes us his disciples. This means that the church is not just any family. We are a family formed by God—and sent out with a purpose.
The church is a family that ministers to one another, cares for one another, and builds one another up. Each member of the family is a child of God who is uniquely gifted to bless the family and to be a light in our city.
Just like a vine grows best with a good trellis, our church family grows best with good programs. Our programs and ministries are tailored to support the community and mission God has given us.
"Membership...is about committing to a family that serves one another."
Church membership is different from other kinds of membership. Instead of being served, you serve. Instead of feeling superior, you’re humble. At Cornerstone, membership isn’t about “getting in” and taking advantage. It’s about committing to a family that serves one another.
When you become a member at Cornerstone, it’s because you want to be a committed part of this local church family while God has you in West LA. Like a family, members at Cornerstone have their flaws; like a family, we still love each other. At it’s core, membership is the way we promise to stand by one another in love, no matter what, as we follow God together.
If you are interested in church membership, you should start with our Intro to Cornerstone class. This class introduces the core elements of Christianity and explains how we live them out here at Cornerstone. The Intro to Cornerstone class is offered 4 times a year on Sunday mornings.
Intro to Cornerstone is part 1 of a 3 part pathway series for those new to Cornerstone and those interested in becoming a member at Cornerstone. Sessions are held once a month in 3 month cycles. The first session is an informal "get-to-know-us" session. If after attending the first session you are interested in becoming a Member at Cornerstone you can attend the following two sessions with an option to formally become a member at the end of the three month cycle.
If, after the 3 part pathway class series, you’d like to commit to our family, then you’ll sign the Membership Covenant. This document is kind of like the vows at a wedding: it details what you are committing to as a member of our family, and what you can expect from the other members around you.
Finally, we’ll have a membership ceremony to celebrate the new members of our family. During a Sunday service, new members are brought before the church, prayed over, and welcomed in. Our existing members vocally covenant to support, encourage, and disciple the new members like they would members of their own family.
What does it mean to belong to a Christian community? This membership class provides an overview of Cornerstone church, touching on the gospel message, our beliefs, and the way we live as God's family in West LA.
Cornerstone Equipping are Sunday afternoons when the entire church family can gather together and be equipped. We want to see men, women, and children learn how to love God, love one another, and carry the gospel to all corners of our city.
God brings many people through Los Angeles as one stop in his plan for their lives. We’re very happy to be a small part of what God is doing in so many different people. While it’s bittersweet to see so many close friends leave, we’re overjoyed that God is bearing fruit with those friends all over the world.
Because of the transient nature of LA, we think it’s all the more important to commit to a local church family, even if you’re only in town for a short time. Whether it’s for a one year job or a two year degree program, we encourage you: while you are here in LA, be all here with us. We think you will find the committed family lifestyle of membership at Cornerstone a blessing whether you are here for a year or a decade.
